Experiment Design

Independent variables

Offset degree: (0-1, representing percentage of baseIOI that probe tone should be offset). So for example, a 0.1 for BaseIOI=600 means trials at 600+/-60 (540 and 660).

Tapping status: (either "Tap" or "No Tap") Indicates whether or not subject should be tapping

BaseIOI: (integer specifying the inter-onset time between notes in milliseconds. This is basically a psychologists way of discussing tempo. An IOI of 1000 means that notes are spaced 1 second apart, and would correspond to a musical tempo marking of 60 beats per minute)

Number measures: number of measures played

Beats per measure: number of beats per measure (first beat is the stressed one).

Silence multiplier: number of IOI units of silence after sounded measures

Dependent Variables

Probe tone correct (yes/no response).

Made explicitly by subject

Confidence rating (number 1-6 corresponding to e.g. Very confident, confident, somewhat confident, somewhat unconfident, unconfident, very unconfident).

Made explicitly by subject

Tapping accuracy: recording times at which subject taps in some way synchronized with stimuli. This is so we can look at who was good at tapping along with the stimuli

Subject taps along with stimuli

Block Design

Stimuli are specified by the combination of baseIOI and offset degree, and presented in 2 conditions ("tap" and "no tap"). To start with, each block will contain all base IOI and offset combinations. Blocks will be presented as both "tap" and "no tap"

For example:

BaseIOI=(400,600)
OffsetDegree=(-0.2,-0.1,0,.1,.2)
TappingStatus=(tap, noTap)

Block 1:

BaseIOI offsetDegree tappingStatus
400   .1   tap
400   .2   tap
600   .1   tap
600   .2   tap

Block 2:

BaseIOI offsetDegree tappingStatus
400   .1   noTap
400   .2   noTap
600   .1   noTap
600   .2   noTap

TODO

  1. Now there are individual output files, but no overall summary data file (e.g. each subject has one data file)
  2. Eventually, the output should all go in an output folder, as with the SI stuff
  3. There should be 3 beats of silence, rather than 4. Obviously, this is easily fixed by changing the properties file (which I did) but I just wanted you to know so we're on the same page (I just changed the properties file)
  4. Obviously the text is only a stand-in, but eventually it would be good if in addition to "tap" "no-tap" the text changed color and/or there were a few seconds of additional time between trials on which the tapping status switched, just to make it a little more clear when they switch from tapping to no tapping.
  5. This data is all comma separated, rather than tab separated. The other data files are tab separated, so it would be good to just use the same scheme for both.

Original Description

In this experiment, you will hear 4 tones pattern consisting of 1 high note followed by 3 lower notes, sounding like this:

The pattern will be repeated 4 times,and followed by a final “test tone”. During the fourth repetition the lower tones will be omitted. The entire sequence will sound like this:

Your task is to report whether the final “test tone” occurs at the proper time (e.g. where you would expect the next tone to sound if the pattern were to continue). In some sections, you will be asked to tap with your finger, hand, feet, etc. in order to keep the rhythm. In other sections, you will be asked not to tap and must keep track of the rhythm by counting alone. It is very important that you refrain from tapping any part of your body during these sections. After each pattern, select Yes from the drop-down menu if the “test tone” sounded at the proper time, or No if the tone did not. Then select the appropriate level of your confidence by choosing the response from the second menu. After you have responded to both questions, press enter to go on to the next trial.
